She Writer Blogger Ball #6

Welcome to the SheWrites Blogger Ball!

 Welcome,

My name is Sheri L. Swift and I'm the author of Legend of the Mer which is a Christian Y/A Fiction Fantasy that I had originally written in my junior year of High School.  My daughters would take it out of an old trunk and read it each summer.  After my baby entered college (some 30 years later) I finally sat down and rewrote it. The first draft was on an electric typewriter because I didn't own a computer.  Then I had a surgery in March of 2008 that revealed that I had cervical and uterine cancer.  I had to go through two separate rounds of radiation.  During those days, my youngest (who still lived at home) not only drove me each day for my treatments, but also read each chapter of my manuscript to me out loud as to help me edit it.  Those were some pretty bad days, but the story helped me to *escape* from my current situation (which was pretty much lying in bed in pain).  I credited her as assistant editor in my book for all of the work she helped me to do.  I eventually took my story one chapter at a time to our local college where they allow the public to use their computers.  Then in November of 2009 I was able to email it for copyright.  After one year of sending my manuscript daily to traditional publishers, it became apparent to me that my book would only be published as a "Partnership" publication which meant that I would spend a great deal of money to have my book in print.  I researched the self-publishing route and discovered that I could have an ebook and a print book without any cost to me.  As you can see by my links to the right, I have successfully published!  ; )

  2. This is such an amazing story. It's almost grief-editing or something. Thank you so much for sharing.

I found you on blogger ball. :)

  3. Thank you, yes it was a sort of grief editing/healing editing. ; )

  4. Congratulations Sheri! A beautiful book jacket too. Now I want to read the memoir about how you survived cancer and got you book published. Seriously.

I love the Blue Ridge Mountains and have lived where you don't have to water the garden. Discovered since living in the Southern Sierra foothills that a winter garden is much less work, at least waterwise. Thanks for the visit on the Blogger Ball.

  5. Your welcome and I can imagine how nice it is to live in the Southern Sierra foothills. When I was a little girl we lived in Pollock Pines for awhile, the winters were harsh though.

Thanks for stopping by. I'm actually currently working on my sequel, but you never know what might be next??? ; )

  7. Hi Sheri! So glad to *meet* you :) I think our books (and perhaps writing purpose) fall into a very similar category; my YA series isn't Christian, but it's geared toward younger teens and, as a parent, I felt a responsibility to keep it clean for them. Many kudos to you for raising 5 children AND a novel!

  8. Congratulations on publishing your book, Sheri. The radiation therapy sounds horrible but I'm glad your story has a happy ending.

  9. Cristina, I love it too and yes, its never too late!

Shelley, glad to meet another YA and I agree on keeping it clean. I actually only raised four, We've just *adopted* the fifth and consider her our oldest daughter.

Helen, thank you. It was rough, I forgot to mention that my youngest is a Nurse and I was blessed to have her aide during those days.

I'm really enjoying the Blogger Ball! ; )

  11. Yes, life does change as they get a little older, only I never seemed to be able to complete anything until they were off at College. Lol! Life can get so busy with a family. Its nice to finally carve out some time for yourself!

  22. Thank you Charity; you are the brave one! Am continually praying for your healing. I suppose at first it was meant for my grandchildren; that they would have a part of my heart. Then I realized that the Nursing Home patients in my community are enjoying it and even some 5th Graders & members of my Church. Now I'm beginning to write the sequel. God bless you Charity! ; )
